The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
