Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
